A gentleman named George Petrie brought the YMCA to New York on June 30th, 146 years ago, to "improve the spiritual, mental and emotional condition for young men." In the 1940s, it admitted women. Today there are 19 branches in the five boroughs, including the wonderful Upper West Side location.
The West Side Y is many things to many people, but to travelers seeking low-cost accommodations, the WSY Guest Rooms provide a home-away-from-home in one of New York's most desirable neighborhoods.
Each summer West Side's rooms accommodate more than 8,000 visitors, 65% of which arrive from overseas, hence the distinctively international flavor that seems to permeate the facility during these months.
a privilege which also applies to YMCA members from other cities.
